Figuring Out When To Do a Brake Check

One of the most important ways to stay safe on the road is ensuring your car’s brake pads are in good working condition. Doing a regular Brake Check can ensure this. Brake pads work to help stop your car that faces the rotator of the disc. The brakes are no good at all without brake pads.

Because car manufactures design each model of vehicle for a specific type of brake pad there are hundreds of different brake pads available. You must adhere to this type of brake pads when replacing them on your car. How do you know it’s time for new brake pads? The first, most obvious sign is a squealing noise coming from your car when you press on the brakes. This loud noise can be quiet a nuisance, and is a sure sign the pads need to be replaced.

Viewing the pads from outside the front tire can show the amount of wear they have on them. By doing a visual Brake check you should check that the pads should be at least one-fourth of an inch thick. If they are less than one-eight inch thick you are risking rotary damage and should immediately have them replaced.

Four Options for Brake Pads

Once you have determined your pads need to be replaced, you have another decision of which type of pad you want for your vehicle. Brake pads are made with four different options: Semi-metallic, non asbestos organic, low metallic NAO, and ceramic.

Depending on what the vehicle is used for can help decide which type of pads to purchase. Semi-metallic pads provide high performance quality, great for aggressive or hard drivers. Organic pads are best for those who make only short trips. Purchasing the wrong type of brake pad can have an impact on your car.

Getting a Brake Check Regularly is Very Important

Since there are many different brands of brake pads, choose a brand that is recommended or with a reputable name. While there are lower cost brake pads, quality counts with brakes. Choosing a trusted name can save you from potential problems with your brake system. This is why it is important to do a regular Brake Check and tune up. They will last longer, which saves money. Luckily, brake pads are not a big issue when it comes to car repairs. Not only are they fast and simple to replace, doing so will not take a huge chunk from your wallet.

Performing a regular Brake Check is an essential thing to do as a preventative action to mitigate the risk of Brake Failure. If you enjoy the idea of being able to stop when you need to, it is essential to maintain regular checks on your brakes to insure that your brakes are performing optimally.

Doing a regular brake check can also help you save a bit of money, as it will help you know when to change, or replace your brakes when they are at the end of their life. Not to early, not to late.

If you are looking to get a brake inspection, there are several easy ways that you can do so:

A) Take your vehicle to a professional brake business. They often have knowledgeable technicians who usually check your brakes for free. Even if you have to pay for the service, it holds a mighty value if you choose not to check your brakes your self.

B) Check them yourself. You can do this easily by placing your vehicle on a jack and using the appropriate tools to remove your tire. Check for grooves in the discs and the thickness of the brake pads. Also look for rust, gunk or dust that may be getting all over the discs. Always remember to spray down your brakes with brake cleaner when you check.

C) Invite over a friend or family member to either check your brakes for you, or to help show you how to check your brakes yourself. Completing a Brake Check is extremely easy and something that every driver should really know how to preform.

D) Take your vehicle in for a tune up every 6 to 8 months. This will save you from having to worry about checking the brakes on your vehicle, unless of course you buy a newer vehicle. This is an expensive and not very practical option, but it is still an option if you have the ability to use it.

Performing regular brake inspections can be an easy and smart addition to your regular vehicle maintenance. It is not a hard procedure to have done or to do yourself, which leaves little excuse for not doing it. Ensuring that your brakes are fully functional at all times can prevent the worst type of accidents. Make sure to spend some time researching more into your automobiles brake system, do this and you definitely will not be sorry.

Dealing With Brake Failure

The last thing a driver should have to worry about, is whether or not their automobiles brakes might fail on them. The ability to stop in your vehicle is one of the most essential safety functions of your vehicle. If they don’t work, it’s only a matter of time before something else finds a way to stop your car and in most situations that is not a pretty scenario. With all this in mind, it becomes a logical and practical suggestion to be proactive about your brakes. Instead of becoming a victim to brake failure down the road, you can keep an alert mind to the prevention of such a thing through several easy tips.

Tips To Avoid Brake Failure

Tip 1) Do a Brake Check regularly, this is very important as it is your first line of defense against brake problems.

Tip 2) Proper Installation. This is vital. If your brakes are not properly installed, they can easily fail. You can do this through learning proper installation and practices yourself, or through taking your vehicle to a professional who can guarantee proper installation.

Tip 3) Purchase at least mid grade brake pads and discs. It’s understandable that we all need to save a buck, but that is no reason to buy the cheapest brake pads if you can put forth the effort to buy at least mid grade brake pads. Especially if you would like to avoid brake failure.

Tip 4) Lead feet are horrible on a car. Speeding around and then screeching to a halt is the worse way to prevent brake failure. I know you have to get there on time or you don’t like waiting, but slowing down and giving yourself the right amount of time to come to a stop, is ultimately the best way to prevent brake failure.

Tip 5) Rotate your tires regularly. At least once every 6 months or so is reasonable and moderate and can help maintain even wear down on your tires and brakes, especially if you have a regular mundane driving routine.

Follow These Simple Tips for Brake Safety

These tips can help you prevent brake failure and become proactive about ensuring that you don’t become an unknowing victim of brake failure. By using these helpful hints, you are making sure your family stays safe and your vehicle stays in one piece. Preventative actions are much more effective then reactive actions. As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. This age old saying is exactly the reason that it will pay off to do a brake check on a regular basis to ensure your brakes are up to par.

Brake Check Tips:

Brakes are one of the most critical parts of any vehicle. Malfunctions in this area can cause accidents and sometimes even death. This is why you must periodically check your brakes so nothing unforeseen happens to you or your vehicle. The main problem most people do not know where to start when it comes to checking their brakes. Here are some simple brake check tips that you can use.

On most vehicles you may be able to inspect the brakes without removing the wheel. Alloy wheels make this possible, but removing the wheel is always a better option. This way you will be able to see the disc and everything associated with the brakes. Checking the disc will be the first thing you will want to do. Look for things such as a shiny disc from edge to edge. Also make sure it is fairly uniform and no warping has occurred. You may see slight lines, but that is really no cause for concern. If you see grooves or warping replace disc right away and always in pairs.

The next thing you will want to check is the brake pads. If less than 1/8 of an inch is left it is time to replace the brake pads. Many people will wait to they hear a sound coming from the brakes and that will usually be a warning noise that many brake pads have built in with a metal tab. Changing them is easy so do not fret if you must do that. Let us look at some other brake check tips that you will want to know about as well.

Always make sure you check the rubber flexible brake lines as well for cracks. Over time these tend to fray away and must be replaced. Check them very closely to make sure they do not need to be replaced. Checking the metal brake lines as well is something you must do. These can deteriorate fast especially in snowy areas where salt is laid down on the roads and come in contact with the brake lines. By following these simple brake check tips your vehicle will be safe and you will have the ability to stop when called upon. It is important that you do a break check at least once a year. Depending on how often you drive you may even want to do this more often. Not only can doing a brake check save you from possible brake failure, you will also save money on having to replace expensive parts.
