Look for things such as a shiny disc from edge to edge. Also make sure it is fairly uniform and no warping has occurred. You may see slight lines, but that is really no cause for concern. The next thing you will want to check is the brake pads. If less than 1/8 of an inch is left it is time to replace the brake pads. Many people will wait to they hear a sound coming from the brakes and that will usually be a warning noise that many brake pads have built in with a metal tab. Always make sure you check the rubber flexible brake lines as well for cracks. Over time these tend to fray away and must be replaced. Check them very closely to make sure they do not need to be replaced. Checking the metal brake lines as well is something you must do. These can deteriorate fast especially in snowy areas where salt is laid down on the roads and come in contact with the brake lines. Depending on how often you drive you may even want to do this more often.
